To those of your breeding your feeders, I have a question

Melisssss Jul 14, 2005 12:51 PM

Are you raising mice or rats? I have asked this question in the rodent forum but am failing to get a response. My animals are below that I will be feeding and the rat snake will take to a rat pup but I am looking to go the route of less hassle for both snakes in one shot. Do I breed rats or mice?

Oh I forgot to add that more than likely I will be adding another BP in a year. Thanks for your time

If everyone will eat rats they are a far superior diet over rodents, they usually have less problems with odor and eating each other/ young under stress. Their gestation peroid is longer than mice and the litters are smaller. Also most snakes more readily eat mice. So long story short, its gonna have to be what works for you. Be perosonally I have a 20 tub rack of rats and a 40 tub rack of mice.

I dont really know about rat snakes so I couldn't say for sure but it would depend on how big your snakes are, what they eat and how much and how often if they will grow at the same rate and continue to eat the same size food? If they both take rats then breed rats.

If both your snakes are feeding on rat pups - you should remember that rat pups only stay rat pup size for about a week to ten days and your breeder will drop about between 8-14 rats, which means you get one or two fresh meals and you'll most likely need to kill and freeze most of your litter before they get to big for you snakes.

With mice you don't really have the problem of them out growing your snake before you feed off the litter. But mice stink are harder to breed and if I didn't have "live mouse eaters" I wouldn't be raising them.

Hmm I never thought of it like that. That would present a problem. The BP is only taking live atm which is what got me thinking. Rat pups are cute but I am not fond of adult rats. To me the only good mouse is a dead one my snake eats or I would never touch them. Guess you can't take all the girl out of me just yet hehe

Tosha, I agree that mice stink, but I get 5 litters every 21 days like clockwork. Got extra frozen ones if ya need some
