Now that you've had them in captivity, I would HIGHLY recommend NOT putting them back. You have handled them, and kept them, and if they've been exposed to any other animal, they could be carrying foreign pathogens which would be reintroduced into the wild population. This could be bad. If they are eating from your hand now, chances are they will not be able to find food effectively. Mine got lazy once I started handfeeding, and won't even look for worms on the floor now. As far as I know, you need a fishing licence to be able to keep these animals, and that doesn't cost much.
Call your local fish and wildlife society and ask.
