Activity Levels Seem Low

qstendious Jul 14, 2005 06:42 PM

I have a panther chameleon that is about 2" snout to vent that seems to have low activity levels. This is my first panther so I'm not really sure what the norm is. I always see him/her just sitting on a branch doing nothing. Sometimes it will walk around the cage and climb upside down up by the lights but very rarely. Now, if I try to clean the cage out, it goes a little nutty ( doesn't like people near it) and starts running around the cage looking very healthy. Please let me know if this sounds normal or not. Thank you guys for all the help,
Jason

I have a new panther also exhibiting the same type of behavior. It is an ambilobe/sambava cross. Did you get yours from LLL Reptile?

Yes I did! I bought it at the Arizona Expo about a month ago. That's pretty weird

yeah, i knew it. it looks exactly like mine. which, i hope, is a male. i requested a male and they said they would try as best they could to guess.

I was hoping for a male too but I'm pretty sure I ended up with a female but that's ok, I'll get a male in the future and maybe try breeding. Male or female, they are fascinating creatures.

Ermmmm..... what activities are you expecting your little guy to be doing? He's a chameleon. They hide. They sit still. Once found, they run for cover. When they see prey, they sneak up, zap em and go back to stealth mode as quickly as possible.
Not like he's a warm-blooded creature. They don't have enough intellect to be curious, nor the metabolism to be doing the 'Happy Dance'. So no, he's not going to be wagging his tail at your sight, nor is going to be all too too happy to see you. Might tolerate you, but it's not like he REALLY REALLY wants to engage you, like say your dog or cat.
Watch for obvious signs of health: clear, bright eyes, good weight for size, no deformities, or abnormalities in structure, and no excessive daytime sleeping.
Oh, I'm reading the first paragraph back to myself. It's just me being funny. Not meant to come off as confrontational.
