So my wax worm breeding experiment seems like a failure..

platinumtlc Jul 14, 2005 09:04 PM

For the past few weeks I've been trying to breed waxworms. I did the whole gran and honey thing and throwing crumpled balls of waxpaper in it. My waxworms do the whole cacoon thing, then the little moths come out. At one time I had like 5-6 moths but then they all starting dying one by one for some reason. So what do I do? should I give up and move on to mealworms? HELP!

Be patient, and don't through it out yet! The moths don't live that long, just long enough to mate and lay eggs. If they did lay eggs on the waxed paper like they should have the baby waxworms will be very tiny when they hatch out. You won't even notice them right away.

If the worms cocooned successfully and emerged as moths you must have the right moisture and temps so the eggs should hatch as well.

It all takes time!

The moths live for like a few days only and then die. I dont see anything on the wax paper. Should I be replacing the food on the bottom? How crumpled should the pieces be, like small grain or like pebble size? I keep it in a little critter carrier in my closet.

The food on the bottom shouldn't need replaced for a long time. The crumpled waxed paper should only be losely crumpled so that the moths can get into the crevices and lay their eggs.

I still wouldn't toss it out yet just in case the moths did have time to lay eggs. They many have laid them on other surfaces too.
