please help, i cant tell if my boa is sick

boasandpythons Jul 15, 2005 01:22 AM

hi, i bought a colubian boa about 2-3 months ago from LLLreptile.com, she arrived perfectly fine and healthy. but she got out of her cage about 2 wks. ago and i just now found her. i could tell that she was very deydrated, so i set her in a bowl of fresh water and se drank continuosly for a bout 5 min.i later offerd her a hopper sized mouse which she took with no hesitation. i set her back in her tank, under the heat lamp, and she didnt really move. i know this is probably normal for she is prob just warming up. but when i hold her she dosent move like she use too.she also seems weaker. im prob, just overreacting but i love this snake very much. i know the tank is set up right i have done plenty of research, and i have 7 other snakes in diffent encolsures. i know cause i have alot of snakes it prob sounds like i should know the answer to this ?, but im only 16 and have only had snake experience for 2 yrs now.do snakes become inactive when deydrated? i put her on my lap and she just sits there in the same position. does this sound normal? im scared to go to sleep even cause i dont want to wake up and see my boa dead. sry for typin such a long message, but can some one please let me know if snakes are incative for a little while after re hydrated? what should i do?
thanks

I think it sounds about normal for the situation. If the snake just drank a lot of water and ate a meal it has no reason to move around. It feels full and just wants to hit the couch and watch NASCAR. Seriously though, keep an eye on it and see if its behavior returns to normal as it approaches its next meal time. Check to make sure it doesn't have any injuries. It is a good sign if it ate a meal and kept it down. You might want to keep notes on its behavior and such. You should be keeping notes on feeding, shedding, and misc. occurrences on all your animals anyway if you are not already doing so. It is a good way to keep track of them and improve husbandry. It also adds to the enjoyment of keeping these animals.

Good luck and keep us posted,
