Humidity level for panthers

mrhuff Jul 15, 2005 07:59 AM

Can anyone advise me on the proper humidity level for panthers? I've read as low as 40% and as high as 80%, and I don't see a consensus. I have a hibiscus and a ficus in my enclosure and mist 2-3 times a day. the humidity will range from 50-70% usually. If it should be higher, how do I get it that way? Thanks.

It's probably best to have the humidity range from high to low and back. No lower than 50% probably. Not constantly as high as 80%. If there are cycles of high of 80% then a gradual drop to 50% as things dry out, and then high again that is what to aim for. It should be high for several hours but then drop so the cage can dry out to keep molds and bacteria from developing on perches and plants. If the cage is big enough and has enough foliage, your cham can move to a moister or drier area when it wants to.

thanks for the info. also, i currently have a hibiscus and a ficus tree in the enclosure. are there any smaller plants you would recommend i stick in there in order to keep the humidity up a bit? thanks.

Pothos and Hawaiian schefflera are easy to find (2 of the most common houseplants sold as "tropical foliage" at home improvement stores, big box stores, or local nurseries...just make sure to change out the potting soil and wash the leaves well), inexpensive, fairly hardy, and can really help fill a cage with foliage and climbing routes.
