Hey guys, Do juveniles retics still need a hide box? If they do what do you think is the best material to use?Boxes.....etc.?
Yes, do give them hideboxes! Especially as small / young snakes, but my adults have hideboxes, also, and use them. Plain cardboard boxes are fine, but make sure there is no loose tape they can get stuck on. If they get stuck on tape they will literally rip their skin off trying to escape it.
With cardboard boxes, I'll have the box sealed, and then cut a hole in an end or side for the snake to go in and out of. It can definitely be exciting to hold food outside the hole and have the snake grab it and pull back in -- you'll miss it if you blink.
The good thing about cardboard boxes is they're free, and you can just throw them away when they get dirty or wet. The bad thing, retics need high humidity, so the boxes will sog out pretty quickly. So I'll often use cat litter pans, just cut a hole in one end and flip it upside down. I often put a brick or rock on top so it gives a bit more security, or maybe because it won't get flipped over as often, with the weight on top. Litter pans are inexpensive and easy to clean, and come in different sizes.
There's nothing wrong with the hideboxes made specifically for snakes. Many of them are practical and attractive. I'm just more of a budget minded keeper (or you could say I'm cheap), so I've outlined what I use.

That's a great picture. And some good looking retics.
Agreed, always keep a hide for the snake. I find the best hides to be rubbermaid containers, just the cheap ones from wal-mart. You can cut a hole in them for entrance, make sure there is enough air flow in it of course. With these as hides, you can put spagnum moss in the container and use it as a humidity hut also. That's what I do for all of my snakes.
Thanks for the info guys!Hmmm...... how do u post a pic?
