Ordering frozen mice... any tips?

nightserpent Jul 15, 2005 11:46 AM

Well, the BP I rescued from the local shelter is getting better and has finally taken a mouse. What a huge relief! I bought him a mouse locally for $2.00, which seems a tad steep to me. I noticed that one can buy frozen packs online. This sounds like it'd be a better deal.. but is it after all the shipping and dry ice costs?

I live in a small apartment in the city (Boston), so I have limited space, so I can't breed my own mice. Nor is my freezer that large, I have to wonder how much space 50 mice would take up? 25 might be a more realistic amount.

Any tips or advice would be most helpful!

First, will the snake take FT? If not, you could be wasting your money. 50 mice will not take up that much room in your freezer. Very little in fact. Make sure the supplier vacuum packs the rodents. You will have to call around and see if it is cost effective for what you want to accomplish.

The place that I get my frozen rodents from charges what amounts to $1.75 (shipping included) per mouse for a 25 pack. A little cheaper than the pet store. Of course the more you order, the better deal you get.

Now for the down side - will your snake even take f/t? Also if you are only feeding one snake you're looking at the possiblity of the mice getting freezer burn or getting a little funky after about a month or so after you cut open the package. I usually repack them in freezer storage bags after I open them, but they still tend not to be so fresh the following weeks. I have some snakes that won't take them after a certain time - and some don't really care you could feed them rancid roadkill (LOL).

As far as space goes - I here is a picture of a 25 pack of rat pups - mice would be the same size.

Hope this helps.

Word from the shelter is that he was used to eating live. I am hoping to wean him off that and get him to take f/t (warming them up a little and wigging then on the end of tongs... at least this worked for my boas). So, I am more or less looking ahead to the next step, should I be able to get him to make the change.

Thanks for the input, I hadn't considered freezer burn... it might take a while to go through 50 mice!

Are BPs less likely to take f/t? I figured the heat pits would make things a bit more complicated.
