Rotting Hondo egg? Thoughts?

blueharlequin Jul 15, 2005 12:08 PM

Hey folks.
I've got a clutch of six eggs that are almost four weeks old now. One of them is starting to look not-so-hot. I've never had an egg go this long and then go bad, so I was interested in anybody's feedback... I've certainly never seen an egg get a bad "spot" on it like this. Thoughts?

Hey paul,

Out of 100 plus corn eggs this season I've had this happen to a few. A few look like yours and have not progressed any further. Others have molded over in a few days and I would consider them lost. Wait and see what happens with your egg before you give it up.

Yeah, I've been taking a wait and see approach. So far, it doesn't seem to have progressed much further in the past few days, and it doesn't have any moulding or anything..

I had the same problem as you last year with an egg. It eventually died. I've had a few "experienced" breeders give me the same tip, Liquid Bandage. Use a Q-tip or other soft clothy material and clean the area up. Add Liquid Bandage to the spot that looks bad; try not to go more than 1/16 of an inch passed where it starts looking "normal" again with the Liquid Bandage(the egg needs to breath). Finally you can hope for the best. Someone else may have a better idea?! Anyone? I'd like to hear more "solutions" that have worked for others.

Good Luck,
Ian Daviss

Ya know.. I almost did this the other day, but it just seemed too wacky. But hey.. I'll try it now. Thanks!

I went ahead and gave this a try. My only concern was for the fumes the stuff likes to give off when it's fresh. I tried to let the stuff dry thoroughly before closing the incubation container back up. I'll let you know how it works..

Don't give up on them until well past the hatch date. Here is a photo of my scarlet king clutch from last 4 looked really moldy but all hatched healthy babies.

I'm sure you got all the information you needed, but if you look at Adam Willich's photos of "2nd hatching" post, in the bottom right hand corner, you see a similar marking on 1 of the eggs and it seems to be hatching beautifully. Tell us if the egg fairs well or not. Thanks,
-Sean
