Desert Iguana

raygat Jul 15, 2005 03:49 PM

Having a hard time coming up with a care sheet.

Was wondering if someone could direct me to one or provide me the basics.

Cage Size
Temps
Substrate
Food

The basic differences between them and the Green Iguana. (Size I have already realized.)

Thanks,
Ray

Hi Ray,

http://www.anapsid.org/dichuck.html

This is the page you need. It's part of Melissa Kaplan's website.
You really can't go wrong with her advice. My Ig is alive and thiving because of her. It's a lot of info but, well worth the life of you pet.
Good luck.

Touch passion when it comes your way, it's hard enough to find as it is. Don't walk away when it calls you by name.

Dipso's are the "Dwarf monitors" of the iguana family.
Very cool animals!

However, as someone I know who has them told me:

They need A LOT of space!
These are desert dwellers, very well known for their speed (just look at their rear legs), so they need plenty of space for running and chasing prey.
I'm talking Green-Iguana space (obviously withouth the height).
Good hiding spots because they are wary lizards.
Play-ground grade sand (for kids).
Very hot basking spot.
Kaplan's link as provided in the other reply is excellent.

A common mistake is to think these small igs can go with a small enclosure. Wrong. These are fast moving iguanas, who need plenty of space to roam and thermo-regulate between the quite hot basking spot, and the cooler areas.

Free-roaming is tricky, due to their size and quickness. A tame animal will do fine, but always be careful of course.

Keep us updated!
