Why do Python have 10 nostrils?

I couldn't find anything about this while searching the web.

for sensing heat. Are you looking at the holes around the bottom side of the mouth?

All pythons have thermoreceptive pits along the labial or Infralabial scales. Except the two members of the genis Aspidites which are more primitive and have no thermoreceptive pits.
