Evil Albino's???

amuru Jul 15, 2005 04:47 PM

Just bought a new leopard albino, very pretty. My question is how long does it generally take any leopard esp. Albinos to acclimate to their new homes? (is it about the same amnt of time one would allow a reptile coming from somewhere it had to be shipped?) I ask because as I get our new friend situated, I was placing his/her (too young to tell) water dish and cage accessories in place and it hissed at me!! A leopard gecko! It raised up in a defensive posture and lunged/hissed at me! I'm so confused as to what to do. He was purchased from a local specialty shop that knows reptiles and how to properly maintain them so he didn't come from a place such as the commercial places found in a town near you that (i'll refrain to name)always overpopulates its creatures causing them to be stressed/sick, etc...Please help a newbie in geckos out!

Your gecko isn't evil its just not used to you. I bought my male albino when he was 4 months old and it took me 6 months to be able to take him out of his tank and put him back in without getting bitten, before I could take him out and really handle him he used to like for me to hold him inside his tank right after he shed. Now he likes for me to put my finger in front of his face so he can lick it before I can pick him up so that he knows its me. Every animal's different so you'll just have to take the time to find out what yours likes as far as being handled so that it can get used to you. My male bit me at the pet store the day I bought him so don't get discouraged.

Of the 4 leos I have, the albino is the friendliest one. Sometimes, it seems like he craves human attention.

My neighbor had one and it was the meanist thing at first. Hiss, flick tail, even bite. I began to help him take care of it everyday and eventually it became somewhat friendly.
