1st one out!

Rick Millspaugh Jul 16, 2005 01:44 AM

Here's a couple pics of the first one out of my Thayeri clutches. This clutch only had 7 out of 11 fertile but she double clutched with another 7 out of 9 fertile (she only had two babies last year). This one was completely out in 58 days at an average temp of 81. I can't wait to see the rest. From what I can see it looks like they are all orange Leonis phase, time will tell.

Great orange leonis hatchling Rick, congrats! I know those clutches of yours are going be very nice with some real winners like this first one. This little one has a very attractive leonis pattern, very narrow saddles laterally with low black and the bold and contrasting black dorsally, one of my favorite combinations on any leonis.

Curious as to what may have improved the fertility of your female. Is there anything significantly different that you did with respect to preparing her between last season and this year that may have made the difference? Different, or possibly better prepared male? Or is she young and simply just one year more mature?

Again, congrats on another fine clutch of thayeri. Looking forward to seeing the sibs!

Mike,
I had some lengthy thoughts on the subject as to why this female's fertility was lower than I would like. After thinking it over, there is no good reason. Sometimes it is just the way it is. Her second clutch is good though. She is a year older than my Milksnake phase female so age is not the problem, the Milksnake female has 100% fertility last year and this year with the same male. Maybe she is just a slow starter.

Thanks Rick, every little tidbit helps. Sometimes just comparing everyones notes makes the whole picture a little easier to see and understand. I really do appreciate you putting the thought and time into the reply.

Your thayeri babies are looking terrific again this year!

LOL, It's not really hate just another bout of petty jealousy. That is a great looking leonis. I have one that looks almost identical to that one. Do you have any milksnake morphs hatching out? I'd really like to see an intergrade if anyone hatches one out.

That is a great looking leonis Rick.....I really like orange leonis thayeri. Can't wait to see the rest of them, especially after shed. As Jonel stated they get brighter after the first shed and show their true colors....
Good Job Rick,

Thanks everyone. The Milksnake female's eggs are due first week in August. This is from two orange Leonis. Mike I'll give you my thoughts on fertility when I get time to write it down.
