Red Tail Boa Breeding

Xavier_MOrte Jul 16, 2005 01:59 AM

Looking for advice on breeding Columbian Red Tail Boas, Boa c. Imperator. I currently have a female het for albino and planning on getting a male, plus an anery boa. Any help would be appreciated.

How long have you kept boa constrictors? Are you well read up on their husbandry requirements?

Assuming you are already versed in boas in captivity, breeding should be a breeze.

Start with a mature female, being of good bulk but not obese ~6plus feet long. The male can be smaller but should be nicely into adulthood as well for best results (I've heard of prolapses being more likely if using males that are to young).

Some people cycle in a rainy/cool season, and although I'm all for what's natural, this is not necessary for breeding. I personally introduced the female into the male's enclosure for 2 months, where breeding (or close to it) was observed several times. This was done in late fall, early winter. My female ate small meals during this time and during gestation. Many won't eat but it is a good idea to offer small prey on occasion.

The snakes do the rest, and make sure the female has a nice quiet cage. A large hide box will give her a nice place for parturition.

Ps, one last hint is to make sure that everything you use is either easy to clean or disposable. Parturition is a messy, messy time!
