Big Trough

madmax444 Jul 15, 2003 07:17 PM

I got an 8ft trough today because i am planning on getting a blackthroat, problem is i cant get it anywhere, we dont have a lot of room and pretty much the only place for it is in my room. We have a friend that has welding equipment so we were thinking about cutting it in half and welding it back together in my room. Any other ideas. I already have a large (8x4x6) outdoor cage built for it in the summer. So i just need to get this trough set up before i can get it. Thanks

Probably not a good idea. Depends on the type of welding your friend is doing your probably going to have a few burned holes in your flooring and maybe start a small fire or two. If your friend is going to weld the trough back togethor with TIG you won't have as much to be concerned about, thats if he can weld galvanized metal with TIG. Once you've welded your trough back togethor inside your room then there's the problem of taking it back out. I believe www.proexotics.com explains how they put there's back togethor after being taken apart, if not ask Robyn.

How tall is it usually they go sideways through doorways. I saw 10 ft by 33inch by 24 inch stock tanks for $93 recently near where I live.

You posted that you could get 10X3X2 troughs for about $93. I would like to know where you live. I can't seem to find any in my neck of the woods (Los Angeles).
P.S....... Thanks for all the great pics you have submitted throughout the years. I hope sobek is doing good as well.
I myself have a 33inch B/T. What a joy he/she is. I will post a pic soon to get opinions on sex....But anyway.....thanks...

I called them once and found they are galanized steel with a poly liner.

big troughs are great, but if you can't get them in the door, it definitely raises problems.

you can create a poison gas by welding the galvanized metal, and that was such a problem my welder didn't want anything to do with it.

we decided to strap it back together with an 8 inch galvanized strap and bolts. rivets didn't work well at all.

the strapping is nice, and it holds two feet of dirt great, but it DOES leak a bit, so it wouldn't be great for an install in a carpeted room.

also keep in mind that two feet of dirt weighs a LOT, so you may want to calculate the load bearing spec of your floor before you get too carried away.

like all of monitor husbandry, nothing is as simple, or straightforward, as it looks : )
