ok you rattled my cage with the zonata pics, so heres a few from this spring, except pics taken IN THEIR NATURAL HABITAT!! the first was found at approx. 4500 feet on a overcast high 50's day, and had just eaten a lizard..

my good friend found this one 10 minutes after the previous one..

approx. 15 minutes later my friend found this surprise

then the rains started so we waited a week to head back to the sierras, the next time there we saw approx. 10 zonatas in the late afternoon including this one..

after taken the z's picture, back it goes into the crack where found....

this z was found under small rock in the middle of granite dome, surprised me to find it there..

Where do you hike?? Your photos (and that you let them go afterward) could not have been more appreciated. Zonatas may just be the most beautiful of North Amercian snakes. Especially the Sierra specimens with their "bowtie" pattern on the head.
I've hiked dozens of times locally trying to find an elusive Zonata specimen from a local, isolated population, but chances are that I'll never see one.
Yet you go hiking and see over 10 in one day! It's just not fair - you will hear from my attorney!!
thanx ameron, as bluerosy said in his post, they are common at certain times of year, not this time of year though. I used to think they were hard to find until a few years ago when a good friend took me out and showed me how to find them, since then I have seen dozens.heres another...
