HomeCages finished

esoteric Jul 16, 2005 02:40 PM

Here's the finished structure I mentioned I was working on a couple weeks ago. The last group of residents moved in this morning.

Just like it appears, it's four separate identically built modules 4' x 2' x 1.5 ' each. The weight is minimal enough that they are easily handleable by a single person. Two heat receptacles, one fluo in each (with no screen to block it), each type managed by separate timers. I could have cut power costs by running the fluos off of a single central ballast, but that would have eliminated the modularity of the system.
There's venting on the non-heat side and air intake at the base of each door. The door pivots on a 1.25" dowel in a way that it won't jam with sand (or scare teh animals) like the sliders on my Vision cages. Locking is achieved simply with a couple pins to hold the door in place.
All interior surfaces have been coated with epoxy resin for durability and moisture resistance (these resins cure to be as hard as aluminum).

Looks like materials costs are pretty basic:
Acrylic $17.99
2' x 4' x 1/4" Birch or oak floor $6.88
2' x 4' x 1/8" Hardboard (2x) $2.25
1"x2"x8' Boards (8x) $1.15
Slow cure epoxy ~$20 (bought in bulk)
1.25" Dowel ~$5
Metal hardware ~$10

So, about $75 per unit (x4) plus fasteners and glue, electrical, time, tools, etc. I think my Vision cages were a good $220 per unit for 3'x2'x1.5'. I'll eventually be making two more units to stack with those so tool and spare material costs carry through to that.

A closeup of the pivot and locking pins. Very simple to do.

I'd like to put in my order for two, on a stand, and 4' wide. Thank you, and when can I expect delivery?

Really, those are pretty darn cool!

If you're in a rush it's worth your while to try it yourself

I'm wood illiterate! Don't suppose I can weld up a good looking cage?

I don't know, you tell me! Spot or Arc? I've never done anythign like this before. My parents were visiting and I had my father do a skills review of the tablesaw I had picked up from a friend a few years ago and haven't touched. Haven't used one since Jr High, probably in '90 and they never really let us USE it.
I designed this around a minimum of precision cuts and even those are /-. There are two big rules:
Make it consistent.
Make it square (everywhere).

but I was just kidding as I wouldn't weld up a metal cage. Though I have been thinking of metal framed with wood sides as inserts.

Hmmmm....

Very slick! Looks really nice, too - I certainly wouldn't mind one of those in my living room.

Your cages look awesome. Very practical with everything necessary for the uros. Where did you locate the basking light? Is one side plexiglass and the other screen? Nice work.

All transparent sides are plexiglass, .1" thick. I planned on glass originally, but glass would have required more and more careful work. You can hit plexi with a hammer and run it through a tablesaw and not have problems. Tolerances are a lot looser than they appear to be

Basking fixtures are all on one side.

Wow! Those look awesome!

I am jealous, I am not really allowed to have power tools... Though my parents DID give me a circular saw for Christmas. I am 28 years old and my family still cringes when I use a knife! Sometimes it is hard to overcome with your family the little things from childhood (like cutting one's self with a butter knife every time you tried to use one... ).

The things I could do with a table saw! lol
