Bad news, this evening Shadow died...

SHvar Jul 16, 2005 10:08 PM

He was fine, doing good last night, this morning he had the worst respiratory infection Ive seen, like a hose squirting water, I cleared his airway, rinsed his mouth with a weak nolvalsan water mixture and water, he was doing better. This evening I got the call at work that he died.

I am very sorry for your loss ....

FR Jul 16, 2005 11:57 PM

Sorry for your loss. Its odd, but in those last pictures, It got a feeling, he/she, was not right looking.

Also, If I am lucky with this guess, I would get the feeling, your using to much heat, of course I am only guessing, but it strikes me as your lites are too close together.

There is all kinds of ways to injure them with heat, not only surface burns, but also deep heat problems. Some species of monitors like albigs seem to have real thick skin and are not prone to burning. Others like Blue-tails and lacies, can get burns very easily. Which indeed teachs you the limits of litebulbs. One of the reasons we moved away from all halogen lites.

I used them for many years, then all of a sudden, they did not work and caused lots of burns and problems. Again, sorry for your loss. FR

sorry for your loss, anyone know why it was so sudden?

Hi Frank!
That's right, doreanus can get burn very easily but i don't agree with you for the lacie...From what i saw, varius are much more "direct" heat tolerant. But it's only my point of vue

FR Jul 17, 2005 12:48 PM

Do you actually have lacies to compare, I do. They are the only monitor I have ever had that got sunburn while being outside. (of course they had many places to hide, encluding going inside)

While they may not be as easy to burn as Bluetails, they sure burn easier then every other species I have had, and that is many. Thanks FR

chuck911jeep Jul 17, 2005 01:19 PM

To tell you the truth, the lacie is gone since a month, give or take a couple day. Thank's to my friend jobi for this experience with the lace and to take him back. Maby it's not a monitor "made for me". I fact, i never saw a lizard overglorified as the lacie. Ask me the only monitor i don't want to see anymore in my house and i will probably tell you the varius. Maby there is a specie for everyone... Mine are the Bewani bluetail.
Take care

FR Jul 17, 2005 08:26 PM

Surely you are welcome to your preference of monitor species. But having one for a short time does not allow you to make statements as you have done.

Those bluetails are sweet. Just not for me. FR

Justin doreanus have shinny reflective scales especially designed for sun exposure!
Not the case with lacies, they are so much distinct from each other that any comparison is unfair.

Also sorry for your loss.
Frank what bulbs are you using Now?

From his twisted backbone, his strange eating habits like no animal Ive ever had, to his normal behaviors. From the beginning he was lazy, on occaision he would run around digging, etc almost act normal, but not very often. According to Rob Faust hes always had a bigtime feeding problem, I noticed the same although I got him started growing and acting a bit more normal. He was examined by Sobeks vet when she was bound up with eggs. He determined that theres nothing unusual with his physical condition, but like any animal or person with a twisted, bent backbone/spinal cord, he may have worse problems as he grows, or he may not. He has not grown much in the last 1.5 years, but this spring and early summer he grew 1.5 inches very suddenly with his bulged backbone appearing more bent. I dont know if this could have had anything to do with his sickness.
His basking lights are mounted 12-12.5 inches from the wood like Sobeks. The surface temps there are between 138-157 if I remember, depends on air temperatures. The air temps fluctuate less in this reptile room than I had a problem with cages in the last house, off course its in a basement. The warm ambients are between 86f-88f by the basking spot, on the ground next to it the air temps are around 82f, the cool end air temps are between 73-78f depends on room temps.
Heres a picture without the flourescent lights in the ceiling of the room lit in the cage, taken a few seconds before.

At first I thought the central air cooled that area of the basement off too much, afterwards I realized "then why werent the ackies and storrs affected", they are directly on the other side of the heat/cool register with less insulated, less temperature resisitant caging. It has been so humid here lately, 93%, I started running a dehumidifier in the basement, and shut the AC off.

I forgot that is the one with the spinal deformities. Of course your right, the deformity is rarely just what you can see.

Congrats on giving him the life and care you did. FR

Excuse me, Frank. Would you please let me know what heating and/or lighting that you are currently using with your monitors since you are not using halogens anymore? Thank you very much.

He was a very well developed male.

I new he would have problems down the road, but it seemed too early for this, he will be missed by my family. He was a very unique animal with all of his own unique problems, I accepted this when I made arrangements to get him, also as the problems got worse and better sometimes.
Every time that chunk of bone floating loose in my finger causes me pain Ill remember him. He crunched it off of my one knuckle during a feeding accident.

Sorry for your loss. I noticed this picture posted below and thought something didn't look right. Good on you for offering him a good life even if it was short lived. With his condition it would be hard to determin what went wrong.

reddragon01 Jul 18, 2005 12:38 PM

So sorry for your loss amigo.
