Indonesian garter snake?

dionythicus Jul 17, 2005 12:06 AM

Does anyone know anything at all about this species? I've been informed that it isn't a true thamnophis species, but what is it then? Looks like a garter, same head/body shape and black body with two longitudinal ochre/amber stripes, and a bright zebra striped black and white belly. It eats guppies. I'm just hoping to get more info on it. Thanks in advance.

Try doing a search under Xenochrophis vittata. I kept one back in the late 80's and it was a nice little snake. One of the things that makes them non-garter snake like is that they're egg layers from what I recall. They're all pretty much wild caught (unless someone's started breeding them) so they do tend to have a parasite load. That's what I feel eventually caused the death of my snake (after about a year) so I'd recommend taking a fecal sample to the vet at minimum, to see what they find. There have been a few posts on these in the past in the forums.
