Live or Fake plants for Panther Chameleon???

pancham Jul 17, 2005 12:25 AM

Hi, I was just wondering If I should use all fake vines and plants instead of live ones for a panther chameleon because of possible bacteria that could form from live plants. Any replies are appreciated. I ask because I found some great fake plants and cage furniture.

Thanks alot
Pancham

Hi, a nice live plant (atleast one) is best. They like to use it for security to hide in, and it holds water , which keeps humidity up. Looks great also!

I use fake vines, and have used some fake silky vines, in my smaller chameleon cages BUT.... along with a real plant of some sort.

But for the bigger Panther I would strongly recommend atleast one LIVE plant. Heres a link you can read on Panther care, that further down talks of cage, furniture/ plants.

Hope this helps ya somewhat! Post some pics of your panther when ya get time

The risks of bacteria from live plants is much lower than the risk of dehydrating the cham by not using them in the habitat. After all, most bacteria a plant would normally carry the cham has already been exposed to from day one. If you repot the plants when you get them and use sterile potting soil that does not include perlite (those little white balls...some chams try to eat them), and clean the foliage well when you first get the plant and remove or clean off soiled leaves as needed you should be fine. Also make sure your pots drain well by putting a layer of pebbles in the bottom of the pot and trying not to use saucers it will cut down on molds etc from all the spraying. I use fakes to fill in places in the cage where a live plant just won't do well or to provide viny climbing routes. You have to keep the fakes clean too.
