Hydei Fruit Flies and tiny crix...m

trinacliff Jul 15, 2003 08:00 PM

Well, my shipment finally got here...1/16" crickets and Hydei Flightless FF. The crix really are that size...(Lele, this is for you...LOL!)...for some reason they look more like ants than my other shipment of small pinhead crix. Could they be a different kind? Just wondering. These came from reptilefood.com and my last shipment came from a place here in FL. Instead of being almost see through, they are dark...weird?

The FF are the larger species...and wow, does my little 4 month old R. Brev. love them! More bang for her bite...so to speak...LOL! She gobbled up a few just after I put them in there even though it was close to bedtime. I hope these are ok for me to feed her...I would assume since the smaller FF are ok...they have RED eyes...freaky looking.

A few questions though...first of all, I just read on reptilefood.com's site that the nutritional make up of the FF (eithere large or small) are similar to mealworms...is that correct? If so, should I not feed them to her that often? I was under the impression that mealies were for treats only.
Also, there are about 50 per vial...if I feed all of the FF from one vial, have they more than likely already laid eggs in there? Should I alternate vials so as to not deplete one too quickly? I hope I'm making sense...
Thanks1
Kristen

I have 2 cultures that I have going at once.

It is recommended that you leave adult fruit flies in a culture for 48 hours without disturbing them. Then feel free to use them. In that amount of time, they will have layed enough eggs to restart the process.

Their FF's are in a very nutritious medium which the flies feed from. You can also put some flies in with an orange slice that you dabbed with a bit of honey, vitamin dust, calcium dust, and also sprinkled with a tiny bit of yeast. The flies will eat that and be gutloaded.

Also you get a tub full (about one pint or larger) of flies from them.

I have always wondered about the nutriton in the meduim. I got dry culture, vials, ff etc. from Timberline so I keep some going but I like your tip about gutloading the flies! A little more natural nutrition!

Are you saying put the orange slice and stuff in the cham's enclosure? Just trying to clarify. Thanks for the tip!
