How can I tell if turtle is gravid?

razyrsharpe Jul 15, 2003 08:02 PM

i have a female that i believe to be gravid, how can i be sure? she has dug what i think is a "test" hole. she has refused food the past three feedings (nightcrawlers!) do boxies looking to nest refuse to eat? i have given ample areas of soft dirt/sand for her to use. what kind of behavior should i look for? what physical symptoms will they show? thanks.

If you have been monitoring her weight, then a significant gain can be an indication. Behavior varies according to the individual.
Make sure that the soil is packed down hard! If the nest keeps caving in as a result of loose soil, she might give up.
If you scroll back down to a posting on June 21 "Palpating 123s Please" I think Nathan responded with very clear instructions.
I had two girls lay eggs last month: one marched around nonstop, periodically tanking up on water, and ate a monster slug that morning . The other kept a very low profile, as usual, until I found her out and about after the others had gone to bed (6:30,7pm-ish). Just two girls, but two very different behaviors.
They both started digging at about 7-7:30pm.
Keep an eye on her in the evening, but be discreet so she feels safe.
Good luck!
