Buying Imported, Tips?

viper69 Jul 17, 2005 03:04 AM

Man I was at the reptile show today, and I saw one of the absolute MOST gorgeous female Mossy's I have seen in a couple of years. She was simply nothing but a carpet of lichenous green.

I regret not getting her for $50, however she was an importn and it would have been an impulse buy..and I don't do that (unless it's a tarantula hah)

So, w/that said, I looked her, and she had just shed that day, and her tail wasn't curles, and she actually looked pretty hydrated actually, and def. wasn't skinny. I didn't check out her calcium sacs however.

In the future, if I do decide to buy a WC mossy in an attempt to breed, what type of steps should I take when I get the WC animal. I realize you isolate them/quarantine them..

But after that, I don't know of any real firm steps one should take.

Any advice would be helpful

Thanks

From someone who just had a bad experience (seller is resolving it), I would wait until fall. From what I've heard, the imports aren't very good this time of year, and the weather is too hot to ship them anyway.

Unless you can get them locally, I'd wait, or make sure you have good photos from the seller.

yeah, I just reread your post and saw you had a pair already. Which means you know far more than me, since I've only had mine a week.

Good luck in your search. I'm sure someone else knows all the other details you want and will post.

yea, i think you looked over pretty much all the necessary stuff as far as the animal goes. usually the ones i get from shows are a little bit dehydrated at first, but still good enough to buy. just spray them a lot and they should come back. good eaters too. if i were you, i probably would have bought her, but thats just me. if i see something that looks real nice and is at a good price, i usually dont think twice before i decide to buy it, as long as i stay in my spending limit. $50 was a good price, and it sounded like a good animal, both outward appearance and general health. you could have also asked maybe if the owner knows how long it has been in. get the sellers card too. i guess you might go into buying online too, in that case i would really seek references, and more than likely hold off till it's cooler.

so what show was it that you went to to see this mossy? i hope not the SC show because i decided not to go to that one for once.
