URGENT HELP NEEDED!

kennny Jul 17, 2005 11:21 AM

Hi everyone,

I've got a problem with one of my female royals and hope someone can point me in the right direction - 3 months ago she lightly burnt herself on a heatmat, I spotted it straight away and with daily bathing and a rapid shed cycle she seemed fine and i returned her to her original viv (not the one she was burnt in) she's always been a fussy eater so i've not been getting her out but last week she shed again so on friday i offered two large mice which she readily accepted. i left her to digest her food and checked her today to find what looked like semi brown skin/scarring with white blotches mixed in with it along her belly (the white blotches looked as if she had rolled in her own white feaces) i bathed her immediatly but the white and the off colour skin remain - can anyone advice what this might be? my set up has a ceramic plate on the roof and did have a heatmat inside - both on habistats, i've removed the heatmat and now placed it under the viv.

can anyone advice what this might be or the cause of the problem? I'm more than happy to completly refit her viv if needed.

a very worried kenny.

thanks for getting back to me - i'm using newspaper with basic wood chippings from the pet shop, though not a complete covering - just enough to help with shedding. i've removed all wood chippings today so just news paper.

many thanks,

Kenny.

that's not a very clear photo.

I only found the one photo in the gallery, is there another one??

Here is what it looks like to me.
The white section and above it looks like scar tissue.

However, the rust colored area looks like scale rot.

It appears that there are a few blisters in this area.
Are there any blisters, or does it just look like that from the photo??

Again, it's hard to tell from that photo, but that is what it looks like to me.

I would apply Providone Iodine 10% solution to the area twice daily.
It works great for burns and scale rot, so your bases will be covered.

the generic stuff is pretty cheap, and the same active ingredients.

Hi Tom,

thanks for the advice, I have added another photo unfortunatly its also not great. I dont think there are any blisters (nothing that looks like trapped fluid) I also have some oral antibiotics - would it be worth giving her this as well? the Providone Iodine is that a cream or bathing solution? i have some of both at home but am not sure of the names without checking.

How quickly can this problem develop? when she's off her food i try to handle her as little as possible but checked her the previous week as she was starting her shed cycle and she seemed fine.

many thanks.

It looks like these are blisters in the circled area, thats why I thought it looked like scale rot.

it still looks like scale rot to me.

how fast scale rot can present would depend on the conditions of the habitat.

Provide Iodine is just betadine, a red liquid solution.

you could also apply Neosporin/Bacitracin cream.

keep the substrate dry.

if it gets worse I would consult your vet.

It’s usually a burn or scale rot.

were you keeping the tank too wet??? misting ???

also the UTH are not meant to be put inside the tank, the snake will inevitablly get under the substrate and come in contact with it.

leave it under the tank.

pic or more information would help.

Hi Tom, thanks for your reply, i have up loaded two photos but could not link it to my last post the title is: Urgent help needed! (photos). there not great and though it looks very red it is actually browner in the flesh.

She has had problems shedding in the past so i had been misting her last week prior to her shed, also when I noticed this problem on her tummy i changed her newspaper/wood chippings for just newspaper she had urinated in her hide.

many thanks kenny
