Need Quick Info on Beardies Laying eggs

sacredpurr Jul 17, 2005 12:19 PM

Hello, I am new to breeding Beardies and I got two adult German Giants. I noticed she was gravid but didn't know when she was breed. Well I found one flat egg on top of the sand which made me search and I found her eggs. Unfortunatly in my inexperience I turned a few. So are they dead now? I only found 8 total so does that also mean thats all she had since I was told she lays up to 30. And for future reference please help me with getting a place set up where she will lay her eggs where I want her too. Here is what I did let me know if its OK. I put a tupperware type bowl under the sand, added moist sand and made to cover the top and in front about 5-6 inches( total deepness is probably 8 inches. will she choose that place since that is where the deep sand is and also all other areas are not deep nor is there room for her to dig? Hoe soon will she have eggs again and also should I now take the male out of her cage? Any advice or step by step proceedure whould be greatful. I have the incubator set up and ready to go. But I need all the help I can get. I want to make sure I do not disturb the eggs too much. Thanks for any help. Deb

First thing to worry about is the health of the female. How old is she? Are you keeping her calcium intake up? Separate her from the male. Permanently. Reptile eggs shouldn't be turned, so they are probably dead. For future eggs, put an egg laying box with moist, but not dripping wet vermiculite (NOT sand). Invest in an incubator: http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog/reptile-care-supplies/reptile-incubators/
if you wish to hatch them. Otherwise, just freeze and throw them out. Do you know the lines of your dragons? are they COMPLETELY unrelated? You may have to talk to the breeders you got them from.

Hello, Thanks for replying, To answer your questions My male and female and not related at all. The male is 22 months old ad the female is 24 months old. I have an incubator and I have been breeding Ball Pythons and Tortoises( Sulcatas, Red foots, Greeks and Russians and then some Box Turtles) for years. I have Perlite in the container in the incubator but sand( play sand) in the cage with the female for her to dig in. She gets calcium every other feeding and vitamins and D3 every three days. The lighting and heat are good but like I said I have never had Beardie eggs although I have raised hatchlings( I have 20 of them right now). So the help I need is from her laying the eggs and getting the eggs and all that until hatching. Like how soon will she have more eggs, how long till they hatch, what temp in the incubator is best ect. Thanks for your help, I just want to go this right!!! Deb

Sounds like you know what you're doing! From what i've read, it takes between 65-75 days to hatch. Then they all hatch within 1-2 days of each other. Then they eat up their sac, then you have hungry babies!

I incubated my eggs at about 84 degrees don't go higher than 85 or below 82. My eggs hatched in about two months give or take a few days. They all hatched within a total of a weeks time but my last egg didn't hatch until about two days after the rest of them hatched so they don't always hatch within a day of each other but for the most part it was one came completely out of the egg and then the next one started to hatch. I know that they're not supposed to be turned but I had 4 of mine get turned upside down some how about a month after I had them in the incubator and they hatched just fine but I wouldn't recommend trying it. I got all my info on incubating the eggs from the bearded dragon mannual since this was my first clutch and I didn't know what I was doing either but I hope this information helps.
