what substrate?

lauralyon Jul 17, 2005 01:16 PM

i know this is proabably a topic that you all regret as this must be one of the most common topics of discussion, (i know it is on one of the british forums upon which i lurk) and i was just wondering which substrate everyone uses and what the Pro's and Con's are of said substrate.
And In general Which Substrate the believe is the IDEAL substrate, If Money, And Availability were unlimited?

regards, laura

I use aspen shavings, and i believe a lot of other people use it too. Its cheap, easy to clean, not very dusty and light so the snakes can burrow through it (which they love to do). The only issue i have with any substrate like aspen or wood chips is that if it gets wet it can mold, but as long as you are good about your cleaning protocols, aspen seems to work really well. Carefresh bedding does almost the same stuff, except it tends to be more dusty and is lots more money

I tend to prefer aspen. Very nice corn by the way. Duffy

ok, but tell me, what if you feed your snakes in the tanks like people do...with it being so light, isnt the aspen likly to be ingested along with the mouse?

Well, any substrate is likely to be ingested... that is why you feed them OUT of the cage... why do you want to feed in the cage so bad?
