Finding Termites

kim Jul 15, 2003 08:31 PM

Hi,
I live in NJ and want to collect some termites for my frogs to eat. Ive gone into the woods twice and looked at some old decaying logs but havent had much success. I've seen like 5-6 termites in them but never more than that. Is this normal or do they usually live in large groups? Ive been looking in logs and stumps and stuff but should I be looking underground near them or what? I would really like to find some as a treat for my froggies so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kim

I've had fairly good look finding termites by prying the bark off older, fallen trees. I use a scraper to pry the the bark away and if I find termites, I spread a plastic leaf bag out flat on the ground beside the tree and then use a can of compressed air (the kind used to clean off keyboards)to spray the termites onto the plastic bag. The plastic bag can then be folded in half causing the termites to slide to the fold in the middle. They can then be dumped into a jar. I put a strip or two of corrugated cardboard into the jar--the termites crawl up into it and can be shaken or tapped out into the frog tank.
Since most of the termites live inside the log, try to keep the bark as much intact as possible so it can be easily replaced. That way you can keep comming back for more. For me it's easier than tearing apart the log.

Drill some holes in a piece of 3" or 4" PVC a foot or 18" long. Put a piece damp corrogated cardboard folded inside. Come back in a week and check the cardboard. It works for me....
