Female is upset?

SecretSReptiles Jul 17, 2005 05:43 PM

I just introduced a male and female together. The male is used to being around another dragon.
Well, the female is breeding size, so I slowly introduced them. They shared baths together (she was fine with him). Plus there cage is very close to eather, so they have seen each other.

Today, I introduced them, and the female is all puffed out and is bobbing her head. The male is like,"what are you doing you nut?" and he starts to eat like it's nothing. She then attacks his tail and of course, the male looks at her like she's gone nuts. BUT once they both stop moving, they are fine together. Right now they are sharing the same rock, but she still wags her tail every now and then and starts to puff out. Should I remove the male again, and try again later? This female hasn't been with another dragon in her cage, but has been with others and is ok out of her cage.

well, they just ended there fight? The male won the battle, and now the female isn't showing any signs on wanting to fight now? So far she's now calm and isn't interested to fight anymore.

I'm confused....

I think, and this is all speculation, that they were just figuring out a heirachy. Now that the male has 'won' they should evetually breed. I've heard that aggressive females can make bad cagemates to others or to males so that breeding is difficult. Also, isnt breeding season almost over? she may not be receptive.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if it's over or not. If they don't breed, is it ok to just house them together? so far this morning, both are ok with each other.

I wouldn't, but it's up to you.

I wasn't sure if it's going to be a bad idea to keep them together, but now I know, I'll just keep them apart till next breeding season. By the way, when does breeding season start?

I'm pretty sure female dragons are ready to breed when they come out of brumation(winter). So that can be anywhere in the spring til summer. But because of capitivity, they may be able to breed anytime with low fertility rates.

I have noticed a few people breeding beardies all year round, but I don't want to stress my animals out.
But when does the season start? I have been looking all over the net so far, and can't seem to find the months when brumation starts.

In the wild, brumation occurs naturally during the winter months. You can't put a date to it! It's just part of their body telling them the days are getting shorter and colder. They are then receptive to breed when they come out of brumation (spring/summer). Again, no specific dates or anything. If you want to know how breeders get their animals breeding all year round, ask them!

How old and large are your dragons?

They should be at leasst 2yrs old before they are bred, and a certain number of grams...I cant remember the specifics.

One male and one female should never be housed together, if you want to breed them then put them together only for about 1 week during breeding season. Then seperate them again. The male tends to either constantly breed with the female causing severe stress as well as nutritional drain on the dragon that eventually leads to a variety of illness's.

Do a lot of research on breeding before you do it. beardies can have a lot of babies, up to 30 and that is only a single clutch. Those babies need to be kept until they are about 6inches before they are sold, which takes several months. They need to be housed in small groups (no more than 3-4 to a group) in increasingly larger tanks as they grow. They eat crickets, worms, and veggies like nobodies business and are A LOT of work. You also have to make sure you will be able to find up to 30 or more good homes for these babies.

Just some things to think about
