Albino!

eidechsemann Jul 15, 2003 08:40 PM

I just picked up a beautiful little albino leopard gecko and I'm wondering if there is any special care I should give to her along with the normal leopard gecko care. Since albinos can't see as well and are sterile...thanks!

Hey,

Got an albino eh? Cool. I use exactly the same kind of care with my albinos that I do my normals. And no, the albinos as a morph aren't sterile. My albinos produce, and they produce a lot...

no difference in care, and albinos are not sterile. they can see fine, but bright light bothers them.

So, albino leopards aren't true albinos? Just morphs that make them look that way?

ragnew Jul 15, 2003 09:21 PM

No, albino leopards are definitely albinos. They just aren't sterile.

Ok, gotcha. Thanks a lot everyone.

im still curious, where did you get the idea that they were sterile? is it cos' some other albino reptiles have been sterile?

Actually the term "albino" for leos is incorrect. They really are amelanistic leos because while they do lack melanin, they don't lack the other pigments. A true albino according to the scientific definition is a single gene on a very specific loci that causes the animal to have no pigmentation on the skin, eye, or hair (if it has any). So all the "albino" leos have yellows, or oranges and other colors making them not scientifically true albinos.

Since the word amelenistic litterally means "without black" isn't albinism actually a form of amelenism? Also has anyone ever done tests on the three forms of "albinos" (Tremper Bell and Rainwater) to figure out if one form was Tyrosinase positive while another was Tyrosinase negative.

Andrea1784 Jul 16, 2003 09:10 PM

Well yes, all albinos are amelanistic, but not all amelanistics are albinos which is the case w/ the leopard gecko albinos. I do believe the tyrosinase tests have been done because I have heard about it before on leos but I have no idea what the results were.

I see. I was wondering if this was a possibility since they do not have red eyes like most albino animals.
I just thought they might be sterile because many albino animals are. That's all. I hadn't actually heard that albino leo's were.

goalielocks Jul 16, 2003 08:52 PM

Albino leopard geckos do have red eyes however they often have varying amounts of red present.

iluvblackfrancis Jul 16, 2003 10:10 PM

thats what i always thought, but someone convinced me otherwise. they said that it albino was just the lack of melan, but since mammals only had melan, they lacked all color when being albino. but what you said i agree with 100%.
