My beardie will only eat crickets...help!

autotunz Jul 17, 2005 06:14 PM

I'm trying to get my beardie to eat greens/veggies, but she's stubborn. She's approx. 7-8 months old and will only eat crickets. She used to eat a little bit of veggies (peas, carrots, corn), but won't eat lettuce or other greens. I know that by this age/size she should be switching to greens, but she won't have anything to do with it. Suggestions on getting her to eat right? Thanks!

Try cutting down how many crickets you give them a day. When my two wouldn't eat their vegetables I would only feed them crickets in the morning and unless I saw that they'd eaten some of their vegetables then I wouldn't feed them at night. I feed my beardies 3 times a day I give them crickets in the morning vegetables in the afternoon and more crickets at night. I know that doesn't work for everyone because of their schedules but thats how I got my two to eat their vegetables.

I have babies that are 4 weeks old that eat greens like mad already. Babies need to eat greens from earlty on to develop good eating habits. The breeder should have started them on the greens for you. I have never had a baby that won't eat them if introduced early. What you can try for now is let them go one day without food so they are hungry and then make them a morning salad of greens the next morning and put it in the cage. Leave them with it most of the morning and then give them crickets in the late afternoon. It will motivate them to try the greens more and more each day. It is hard to switch them if they were not offered variety as babies. Good luck.

Tosneys Bearded Dragon Care has a long list of things to try that have worked for others...Smaug used to eat veggies/fruit every day until we moved him into his bigger tank...just in the past two days I've finally gotten him to eat yellow squash...I cut some pieces and hold them in my hand till they warm a little, I know from other pets the cold feeling can put them off food...and he ate them with no problem, the catch is he only eats it when he is out of his tank...go figure....
