I say eastern and there isn't much difference (except pattern) btwn easterns and goini anyway, they are very closely related, much more than other getula subs

Not much difference...except pattern? Please explain. I'm not sure I quite understand what you are saying.

JETZEN Jul 17, 2005 08:01 PM

What's there to explain? You agree or you don't agree.

Sean Jul 17, 2005 09:19 PM

I can't agree or disagree because I'm not sure what you're trying to say. You said there's not much difference except in pattern. Isn't that basically how we ID these different subspecies? I just didn't get the point you were trying to make.

JETZEN Jul 17, 2005 10:19 PM

IMO you can't ID subs by pattern because some in the same sub can have STRIPES/BANDS/SPOTS/PATTERNLESS, you've prolly heard about striped cals being considerd a diff. sub than banded cals many yrs ago.

JETZEN Jul 17, 2005 11:24 PM

ID locales by pattern, does that make sense? Thanks for puttin up with my B.S.
Anyway, what do think the mystery king is?

I found a very interesting article on the "goini" that you guys might find very informative. Something you might want to check out.

The above king looks like a dark variant of an Eastern king, Lampropeltis getula getula. I dont think it is a "goini". I could be wrong though, just my $.02.

Also take a look at Keith Hillsons king site, another very good spot to get some info a pics!!!

FR Jul 17, 2005 08:42 PM

Hi, Again, I have not messed with snakes in a while, but in the early seventies, I did collect goini. I was under the impresson that they were intergrades with no particualr pattern. The blotched pattern was for namesake only.

We found blotched ones(as the name emplied) striped ones, everything inbetween, as well as ones that appearred to be Fla kings. All thru the appalachicola, chipola river area. Hope I got close with the spelling. There was no area that only had Blotched kings. Thanks FR

Sean Jul 17, 2005 09:44 PM

FR, I wanted to know if you ever found any patternless forms. And I'm interested in that you say you found some that looked like FL Kings. Have any pics?

JETZEN Jul 17, 2005 11:08 PM

eastern or goini

Keith Hillson Jul 17, 2005 11:33 PM

You know I have thoughts on it but I wont post them because I have no idea for sure. Nobody knows for sure except the dude who bred it. Eastern Kings are so variable its just too hard to say. Alright alright Ill say what Im thinking but if Im wrong then I wont be shocked. I think its a Eastern X Appalachicola or Goini cross. Ive seen them at shows listed as such and they looked very similar to that. Nice looking snake by the way. Can we get a full body shot ?
