tall terrarium background

hornedfrog Jul 17, 2005 09:30 PM

I just bought a 25" tall terrarium for my bearded dragon. Does anyone know where I can find an aquarium-style background to fit it? The only thing I have found are 24" tall rolls that are 50 feet long and about $55. Does anyone know where I can find a site that will cut it to size? Thanks!

Umm, why would you buy a tall terrarium for a bearded dragon?? They aren't THAT arboreal. You can use regular fishtank backrounds if you are looking to put it on the outside. If not, try using stacked cork bark, I think that would look cool.

I don't understand your rationale here. "They aren't THAT arboreal"??? Arbor=tree. I do not know of any 24" trees. How in any way is a 24" cage arboreal???. Trees are much larger than 24", or 48", or whatever height people use in their "arboreal" enclosures (maybe at 8', we'd be getting somewhere...).

Are you saying that bearded dragons will never climb to heights greater than 24" off the ground? That does not make much sense to me. Surely in the wild they will be climbing higher than 24" whether it be in shrubbery, tree limbs/logs, rock escarpments, fence poles, etc.. I do not understand how you can say that it would be inappropriate to offer a bearded dragon 24" of space. I bet if you offered it 6' of height, it would use every inch.

24" is not 'arboreal' as many of you may think, nor is 36" or 48"... The last time I checked, any truly arboreal species of herp, for example, lives at higher elevations than 24"- heck, would that even be considered a bush? much less a tree????

Just my thoughts...What is wrong with offering extra height? In captivity, people get into the unfortunate habit of making the lizard's decisions for him, as opposed to giving it various chocies, and the option to utilize such vertical space.

Cheers,

Bob
