Color Morph breeding question

sacredpurr Jul 17, 2005 09:37 PM

Hello, I am new to beardie genetics and breeding and I have wondered about this for a little while. But if you have two color morphs, are you guaranteed to have color in the babies or can some normals come out of the mix. I have read a few books on the subject yet it never says anything about that and I breed Balls, Torts and Manx cats but their genetics are all different so I thought I'd ask. I plan to breed( in the future) my orange sandfire to my yellow red desert. I also have two adult German Giants and a cirtus x red sandfire juvy and some 3 week old baby beardies I am raising up. Here is the pictures of the adults. Thanks Deb

Hery Deb!

When you want color in bearded dragons the best thing you can do is buy or holdback the most colorfull dragons you can. Cross them to other unrelated higher color beardies and you will have stunning animals. Of course you will have some color in a baby produced by a normal to a high color but it won't be as intense and there won't be as many colorful dragons in the clutch.

The reason is similar to the Roan line pastel boas. The color is suspected to be a polygenic, or as most say, inherited trait.

Hope that sheds some light on the subject for you!
