Coxi hatchlings....finally

mgl Jul 17, 2005 09:43 PM

Well, my coxi finally came through for me and she is gravid again so we'll go through it once more. 4 eggs hatched after 62 days.

Congratulations mgl, they're beautiful! Question for you about getting coxi hatchlings feeding... I posted in the general rat snake forum, but seeing as you keep coxi, maybe you could provide more specific help?

I have a female coxi that hatched back in March and ate 2 meals of live pinks (last meal on May 4th). She went into shed and hasn't seemed interested in food since. She shed twice in rapid succession (in less than 3 weeks) in May. I've been offering her newborn live pinks weekly, but she's not showing any interest in them. I've also offered f/t and brained pinks. All are left over night in the cage with no distubances. I've gotten a few suggestions from my original post, but in your experience, how do you handle reluctant coxi feeders?

My yearling coxi male has never missed a meal other than when in heavy shed and is a little pig, so I thought I'd be able to handle a new hatchling. Both are kept with out additional heat at this point with an ambient temp of 74-76 degrees (as cool as it gets in my snake room and the same temps I'm keeping my mandarins at).

Suggestions please? Also, any chance that you'll be selling any females out of your clutches this year?
Thanks,

Sorry to hear about your reluctant feeder. I've never really had a problem getting them to eat. The first thing that struck me as a potential problem is the temperature. It never gets above 73 ambient for them and stays pretty much from 64-73 except when brumating. You may want to try peromyscus pinks if you can get ahold of them. They work wonders w/ baby mandarins and reluctant feeders and are smaller. They are domesticated deer mice. They are tough to come by.

Not sure what I'll have available yet, I'm awaiting another clutch to be deposited within the next 10 days or so.

Good luck

My tiny female hatchling died tonight after not feeding for the past 2 months. I just feel horrible about it and wish I knew more of what I could have done to get her back on track. I feel I have the temperature within their range (tub is 74 in front, 75 in back per the temp gun). I know that's a couple of degrees warmer than you're keeping your coxi and I wish I could get it cooler (the heat wave here this summer is really kicking in). Over the past couple of months it is quite possible that temps got higher than that for a brief period, but I've rearranged my caging to keep the coxi pretty much one level above my mandarins. I didn't have a chance to find a source for peromyscus pinks over the past week, but the information is appreciated for future reference.

Thank you again for your advice and I wish you much luck with your recent hatchlings and future clutch.
