When my Sulcata was little I would take the grass and cut it up into small pieces. I would just make a big pile and let him have at it. He had a real hard time actually tearing it when it was planted, so this was the only way he was able to eat grass.
Also the older he gets the more he seems to like grass. He would hardly eat it at first, but now it seems like he would rather have that than pretty much anything(except maybe the rare strawberry). So don't get discouraged if your little guy seems to not eat the grass right away.
thanks for the response. i have some alfalfa hay in my garage, should i just throw in a handful in his tank? is it better than romaine lettuce? and will the tortoise actually like it?
I usually give my leopard tortoise a variety of greens and timothy or alfalfa hay-When its nice out I will put him outside in a large under the bed plastic storage container with a bed of hay as the substrate-he will eat the hay.

Is your substrate rabbit pellets? If so, please be careful. I tried them when my tort was much younger, and I less experienced. He soon discovered that they were edible and started eating them. From what I've read, they're high in protein/calories and not great for a tort to eat. That's one cute tort! It's amazing how fast they grow.
