water dish for froglets

sandnmyteeth2 Jul 18, 2005 12:59 AM

Hi I recently got my 1st frogs. A dime sized Leuc and a nickel sized tinc. I am keeping them in a small kriter keeper with a 1/4" deep water dish. My problem is that my flies drowned in the water. So I was wondering if the dish is nessary or will misting and the water buildup on the sides be enough? THANKS Shawn

They would probably be better off in a plastic shoebox container with some spagnum moss and live plants cuttings like pothos. A few small holes are drilled for ventilation but it hold the humidity alot better. I use them for my youngest froglets. A small critter keeper is really too small for two frogs. Also critter keepers do not hold humidity well and fruitflies escape too easily so the frogs might starve. Judging by the size description you gave they are still very young froglets, but once they are a 3 months old or so they can be moved into a planted ten gallon terrarium. If the tinc is bigger than the leuc you may want to seperate them or he could starve out the leuc.

I am using paper towels for substrate and I have a pothos cliping in there. They are in seprate cages. I taped up most of the vents and I put a paper towel over the top befor I put the lid on to keep the flys in. The cages are 10wX5dX8t.The place I got them said to keep them in the shipping cup for about a month befor going to a 5 gal.But that looked to small to me.thanks for your replies.

That should be fine as long as you spray them every day. I would also add spagnum moss tohelp keep the humidity up and give the frogs something to bury in.

I also use critter-keepers for new froglets, with the vents taped across with clear shipping tape. I like these better than a shoe box because you can see what's going on, watch them feed, and the keepers usually have a central hinged door for feeding, so you don't have to worry about where the frogs are when you open an entire top. Along with a few plants cuttings, such as the pothos you are using, I also put an open shipping cup on its side with a little water in it and some smaller, finer plant cuttings. Java would be fine for this, as well. Very few flies are likely to drown in this, but if the frog feels like soaking, it can. Some froglets like this, but others would rather get under it. I sure wouldn't KEEP them in a closed shipping cup, however, not that you ever intended to. (I wonder where that recommendation came from?) You still need to mist every day or twice a day.

You can get a home garden sprayer (2.5 pt., or 40 oz) RL FLOMASTER from Walmart garden center. This is a pump-action sprayer that can put out a very fine mist and does a better job than the regular hand sprayers designed after counter and window cleaner spray bottles.

Those are sure tiny fellows. Most breeders I know don't ship them that young. Don't be in a hurry to move them to bigger tanks until they grow quite a bit, are obviously eating well, maybe 6 to 8 weeks.

It sounds like you're off to a good start and doing things right.

Yes they are pigs. I have a large terrarium i spent the last four months setting up and now it sounds like these guys wont be ready to go in it for several months. guess I will have to find bigger frogs at the northwest frog fest. LOL Thanks Shawn
