I found some mites on my Burmese

Twntyshooter Jul 18, 2005 02:22 AM

I am posting this message in here because I know more people in here then in the burmese forum. I havent been chatting much in there really. Anyway I was just wondering what steps I should take! for getting rid of these bastards. How much do mites effect snakes. I know they can die from them. How fast do they need to be taken care of. Do I have to be worried! I mean I want and will get rid of them. I just wanted to see how serious it is! Thanks again for everyones past and future replys!

Mites do horrible things to snakes and burms especially. Burms that have had mites come down with chronic respiratory problems more often than not. Mites multiply very fast so you need to treat them aggressively. Get provent a mite and use as directed. This is the best product on the market. You need to clean the enclosure and everything in it, with hot soapy water. And do that weekly until you are sure they are gone. You can also soak the snake initially before treatment in room temperature water, but that won't get rid of all of them. Good luck.

` The trick with mites is to catch them early, then wait for a few days and kill the next generation which hatches from any eggs not killed. The eggs are harder to kill than the adults. As Alex said, act aggressively. A mite infestation can ruin a snake's health, so that even after the mites are gone, the snake remains weak.

` Remember, mites are usually killed with poison, which will kill the snake, too. These poisons are unhealthful to you , too. You've got to be very careful with mite killers, following the instructions religiously. If you can't get any over-the-counter mite poisons quickly, you can use one kind of 'no pest strips' which contain the poison Dichlorvos, which is what I use. This treatment is also dangerous to all. If you plan to use the no pest strips, here's a page of instructions.
`
` Good Luck.

No pest strips were responsible for my losing some expensive boas years ago. Necropsy reports showed deterioration of their brains. Basically, it made them retarded. I was using one inch pieces put in deli cups with holes.

` It's all poison. Provent a mite uses the pesticide Permethrin, which is also a killer of bugs, snakes, and you! Dichlorvos, in the no pest strips is similarly dangerous. Many pesticides attack the nervous system of the bug, killing it that way.

` Part of the problem is folks buying 'mite spray' for snakes, then using it incorrectly because it is thought safe for snakes, It isn't. If you want to kill the mites without hazard to the snakes, chase each one down and stab it with a pin. Also, don't make any other plans, for a while. lol

` Probably, when something you use incorrectly kills the patient, it's you who are responsible, no?

` Damn it though, I do hate retarded snakes. So be careful, whatever you use will likely be poison!

` These two guys were rescued seven years ago. They were covered in mites, and other problems. It took two months of treatment ( not constant !! ) to get rid of the mites.

Deffidently get some provent-a-mite, follow the directions on that. Clean the cage, and spray the cage down with provent-a-mite also. You also might want to do the same with your Anaconda, if they are in the same room even, you would be suprised at how all the snakes in your collection will get them also.

and glad you added that! You really need to treat every snake and cage in the room.
