Monitor dirt and new savannah set up

Kestrel Jul 15, 2003 09:12 PM

A friend of mine owns quite a bit of property near me, and during my first trip up there, I noticed a fairly large bank of dirt that birds had made several nest hollows in. Went to investigate, and found the BEST monitor dirt possible. This stuff is a sandy soil thats so fine it feels almost like flour. When moistened then dried, will hold a burrow strongly. I nabbed 3 large buckets full. Just got done setting up my baby savannah with it. Prefabbed him a burrow under the basking rock, since he probably has no idea how to burrow yet. I'll do my much larger nile with the rest of the dirt later today. His cage will take much more effort. LOL. Anyway, i just wanted to share. This stuff is GREAT!

Looks good! I envy you, all the dirt I could find around here turns into a slimy mess as soon as it gets wet, and dries into a concrete-like cake. Of course, I also need about half a ton of dirt per cage, so a couple of buckets will not do it.

LOL yeah.. all the dirt we have near me is clay and rock.. I went up to the Tall Trees place and they have LOADS of this kind of dirt on their property. See, time to move back to seattle.

Where the hell is the lizard supposed to bask? It should also be able to feel secure while basking (that means be hidden from view). Did everyone in the chat not drill you about screen tops? Monitors know how to bask from the time they hatch.

Your picture is interpreted as abuse by many goanna enthusiasts.
