Herp Room and Temp Control

fhayden1 Jul 18, 2005 12:36 PM

I usually keep my herp in the garage along with a small colony of feeder rats. Lately, my garage has been getting temps from 99-106 during the day. I brought all my boas and rats inside to a spare room in the back of the house.

I'd like to move them back out to the garage. The problem is my garage walls are all concrete with no windows. I want to buy an air conditioner for them but don't want to spend $500 for a portable unless I really have to. Can I buy a window unit and use it like a portable? I've guy a storage shelf I could put it on.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Frank,

Is the ceiling drywalled off or is it open up to the truss'?

If it's open you could cut a hole through the wall wall bult from the last roof truss.

Or, if there is an exterior door, you could cut a hole through that.

There are other options but I really need to know what the garage looks like.

Regardless, you need to vent the back of the window unit to the outside. It might be possible to surround the back with HVAC line of some sort and vent it out the room but I would worry about excessive heat build up.

Chris,
The ceiling is dry wall and I have no windows or doors except the one leading from the house to the garage. Their is a doorway in the ceiling that goes up into the attic.

I have one wall in the whole garage that's dry wall and that's used it to vent out the dryer and has and electrical outlet connected to it.

I usually open my garage door to help get rid of some of the heat.

If you have other ideas I'd be greatful.

Is that wall still concrete behind it?

From the sounds of things you'll need to go with a portable.

Chris,
No, behind the dry wall in the back is nothing. If you put a hole in the wall you'd be looking into the pantry in the kitchen. I agree, that portable is probably the only option.

Thanks for your help.

I wouldn't say it's the only option, but I will say it would be the cheapest. At least from the sounds of it.

I also recommend insulating the garage. Feel free to e-mail if you want some tips on the best way to do that.
