changing colors?????

kkierstead Jul 18, 2005 01:29 PM

My three year old bp has been changing with every shed lateley. Her belly is almost all white, with a little grey on the sides of her belly. The white is starting to come more and more up her sides, and is even starting in between her tan. Even some of her black markings on her sides are becomming more gray towards the botom. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I wish I had a digital camera to post some pics. I took her in as a rescue. I've had her for almost a year now, and she is still growing.

Thanks Kim

Is this something normal that can happen as they mature or is something wrong with her? I was going to breed her this comming up season. I remember reading about the bps that looked normal then turned black and white. I believe they were just babies when this happened though.

Thanks Kim

It can happen. I can say that its a bit odd, but its not completely unheard of . C8S , my python changed her colour when She shed the first time, but she was a baby , so that was natural. I dont think there is anything wrong with your snake.

This has been discussed here many times. Do a search and you'll see some examples of just how dramatic the color changes can be. Some people have had their snakes go from a completely normal looking ball python to one that is totally or almost totally black and white (like a very clean Axanthic) in a single shed. Sometimes, it happens over the course of several sheds.

Without pics none of us can really see how dramatic the color change is that you are talking about. And even with pics we may not be able to see the difference due to the fact that many times the colors get washed out by the flash and that a ball pythons owner tends to see the more subtle things about it's color and pattern the rest of us may miss.

There have been some ideas about why some of the more dramatic color changes occur. At this point they best theory I've heard is stress since it seems that the snakes that do it tend to either be recent imports or newly acquired animals. Sometimes though this doesn't fly because it is an animal that has been kept for many years under the same conditions by the same owner.

Then again, ball pythons do change color slowly as they age. The young tend to be bright and vibrantly colored. But the older they get the more speckling you will see creeping in and the more the yellows and oranges will fade into more of a brown color. Each ball is different and some individuals exhibit more of this color change than others.

If you are really gung-ho about posting pics many places will process your regular film and put the pictures on a CD for you to upload onto your computer if you want. Just a thought.

I wouldn't worry about it (if you are) unless your balls belly scales appear abnormally red even between sheds, or they are green tinted or have blisters on them. If you see any of these symptoms or anything else that looks out of the ordinary (besides for the color change you are describing) bring him/her to the vet as soon as you are able.

I wish I could tell you more about what is going on. But without pics and without a clear answer why this happens there isn't much I can tell you.

Thank you for you replys. Her scales look fine. The only thing that is drasticly changing is her belly. It is almost all snow white, Except for a couple of light grey (washed out) marks left. The markings on her neck are getting an almost satiny look. I'm going to see what I can do about getting some pics.

Thanks Kim

Many of our older females who were imported as adults in the mid 90s have become more white with age. Also, some of our other females show more white during the breeding season and quickly darken back after their first shed post deposition.
