Sexing a baby hog island boa

Melle Jul 15, 2003 09:22 PM

Hello
I just got a baby hog island boa, he's about a foot and a half, and i was told by the breeder that he was male. but im not altogether sure, because i only see really tiny spurs. do they get more pronounced in males as they get older? Does anyone have pictures of the tails of both male and female boas so i can see how exactly each sex's tail tapers? Thanks =)

Melissa

males and femals can both have spurs... to tell for sure hold your boas tail and rub gently (but firmly) down from the colaca towards the tip of the tail, in the first inch or so after the colaca, if its a male you'll feel 2 squishy little "b.b."s (little bumps). if those are present its a male for sure, if not its a female or you missed them.
if you dont feel em the first time, try a few more times, remember, gently, youre looking for a little 'pop pop' feeling.. if your try more than a few times and dont feel em it could very well be a female.

good luck
