probably a dumb question

Why exactly is a "ringer" not a very low percentage pied? I've just been wondering. Have people tried to breed ringers to pieds and proven it not to be the same thing? Just curious...

Ringers are not low white pieds. If you look at the patterned area on a pied they generally have either an incredibly busy pattern or two black dorsal stripes running laterally...sometimes the pattern is a combination of the two. Pieds will also have a milk white belly...no speckles, nothing.

I assure you they are not the same morph. I believe either Ralph Davis or NERD stumbled upon a line of ringers that they were able to prove genetic...but I don't remember all of the details. For the most part, ringers are abberancies, popping up in clutches at random and with varying degrees of intensity. Most of the time the "ring" is located behind the cloaca but I have seen a few individuals with a slightly faded ring just above the cloaca.

If you get a chance, either arrange for a visit to a breeder near you or check out a local reptile show. Ringers are common enough that you will most likely see at least one at any decent sized show and pieds are a staple morph that should also be present. Seeing a morph in person reveals a lot of subtle color and pattern that is sometimes lost in the camera's flash.
