Hissing Cockroaches

Melle Jul 15, 2003 09:36 PM

Hello
I've just acquired 5 hissing cockroaches, and i am hoping to get em to breed and be able to feed them to my beardie. I have a few questions though- as long as they arent bigger than the space between his eyes they are ok to feed, right? (hes full grown, 17 1/2 inches, a year old). and i know for leopard geckos its best to feed them when they are freshly molted. is it the same for beardies or can i feed them whether the roaches are molted or not? Thanks =)

yes freshly molted is best. you will find that the roaches go through stages of growth. when the are long and round (not flat and wide) is when they are the meatiest. that is right before the become adults. You will have a while to wait. Hissers take 6 months to mature and another 6 months before the will give birth. they will have 20-30 babies. You can cull out a lot of males as the breading ratio only needs to be 20% males. any other questions give me a shout

good luck

Thanks for the response. I actually have no idea how old my roaches are. I got them for free after buying a boa from a snake breeder who used to keep lizards as well, but no longer has lizards but still kept the roaches. wow i didnt realize they took that long to breed, lol. well, i guess i will just have to wait thanks again!
