Possible to have a blind uromastyx?

kimax Jul 18, 2005 10:00 PM

My friend works at a petstore and when a severly dehydrated red saharan came in and did not eat for days, they allowed her to take it home and try and nurse it back to health. She asked for my help because i have a saharan and so the first thing we did after much research was a nice hot soak. He immediatly lapped up water and his skin seemed to swell to a healthier appearance. For the next couple of days we assist fed him and since then he has began to eat some on his own. I noticed that he is very careful when walking around his enclosure and normally feels around with his nose before moving forward. He is also very cautious in his steps. Could this be a sign of blindness? His eyes do seem somewhat sunked in (possibly from his dehydration), but never the less they are opne when he walks. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. This little dude has come a long way and I just wondered if anyone else has a blind uro. Thanks! (sorry this was soo long, i just felt a history on him was in order)

I have heard of it kappening.Try putting your hand close to it and moving it back and forth without making any noise.See if it's eyes follow your hand.

Sounds like, from what you said, that it still may be pretty lethargic and just not have the energy to react normally. Keep nursing it to a healthier stage and see if there are any signs of normal vision. The downside is, that after the assisted feeding and eveything you've done to help it, there may be some tameness that comes of it and it may not react "normal" to your pressence.

Keep us informed. definately a different subject.

I stayed at my friend's last night and we assist fed him. He ate around 3 mL of the veggie puree and electrolyte solution. How often should this be done if he eats only a tiny bit on his own? Is it better in the morning or night? Or twice a day? The only thing that concerns us is the stress to the animal!

When Rocky was lethargic, I fed him through the syringe twice a day with the 50-50 baby food and pedialyte. I did this for a week and a half or so, but it really isn't the time, but rather when I started seeing a difference in his energy. When it started picking up, so did his frequency to eat fresh veggies on his own. Since it wasn't up to the normal amounts, I reduced his feedings to once a day for another week, or until his eating habbits returned. To reduce the stress, I went from multiple 1cc syringe squirts to a 6cc syringe.

Once I go the plastic tip up underneath his upper "lip", I'd put just a dab of the mixture for a taste. Once he'd open his mouth a bit to lick, I'd wedge teh syringe in preventing him to close his mouth. Then, slowly squirt the mixture in, as long as he'd take it. On good days, you can see him appear to open his throat, and you can squirt the entire syringe in and it just goes down.

Rocky was down to 68 grams when I decided something had to be done. He's now close to 200 grams.
