Cleaning Substances

fishyfish Jul 18, 2005 10:38 PM

I read on this forum some time ago, about a bleach substitute that was safer, and didnt have to air out after cleaning the items in the tank. There was a generic form of this and it was only about 15 bucks online somewhere, but i cant seem to remember what it was called, or the site i saw it on. Could someone please help me out?
Thanks

I'm pretty sure your thinking of Nolvasan. You can find the generic brand at the link below.

Yes I think that was it. On the description, it doesnt say anything about lizards, will it still work for them too?

It does not say for use specifically for reptiles, but many vet offices use this to clean their working areas, exam tables, utensils etc. Nolvasan is a great all purpose disinfectant. At times it is prescribed as a mouth rinse for reptiles with stomatitis (mouth rot), and for bathing reptiles with bacterial/fungal infections. If it's safe to put in their mouth or used directly on the skin it should be fine for cleaning cages, and cage decorations. Of course keep out of their eyes, and diluted as recommended 2 tablespoons for every gallon of water. I've been using the generic Nolvasan (Chlorahexidine) for over 2 years in this matter with no problems. Much safer then bleach or other strong disinfectants, and in my opinion smells much nicer.

plus 2 tablespoons makes 1 gallon of safe all purpose disinfectant cleaner. A great value when you think that 1 gallon of Nolvasan makes 128 gallons of cleaner.
