Shedding Question

Kersplat214 Jul 19, 2005 09:13 AM

Hello everyone. My boyfriend and I are first time reptile keepers. We decided on a Tokay gecko - not exactly nice, but very cool looking. Anyway, we went and got one, I think a female, about 10 inches tail and all. The day after we brought her home, she started shedding. She has not eaten all of her shed, and still has a little bit attached to her back and tail. So far I've not been able to find any info on how long to wait before I try to help her get it off. I understand Tokays are serious biters, so I'm not exactly excited about sticking a Q-tip in there and poking her. Anyone know how long I should wait before trying to get the remaining shed off? What are signs of infection? Any help would be greatly appreciated. )

Hi Nicole, although I do not have a tokay, I have many other geckos and lizards, when they have some shed problems, you can get a water spray bottle and mist her a couple times a day it should come off.

I can handle my lizards, so if I have any that have tough shed problems that will not cooperate even from misting, I just put a dab of mineral oil on the area, works like a charm.

But your right, tokays are not real crazy about being handled, so go with the mistings for now. I was always told NOT to pull shed off (especially if its still kind of attached) it can cause an infection.)

MIST... and see how she does, Let us know

Hi Eve. Thanks for replying! My tokay is definately NOT nice, she woke me up last night barking at the cat for being too close to her tank. Even barked at me this morning when I went to mist her!

I've been misting twice a day, in the morning right before I turn her lights on, and at night right after I turn them off. Since she's been shedding, I've been misting her up to four times a day, and last night she did get the last big piece off, she just has a few little flakes here and there. I'm probably just an over worried newbie, I'm sure she's done this lots of times before.

My boyfriend swears up and down that we're not supposed to remove the shed from the floor of her tank because she will eat it. I caught her eating some off her toes (which was very cute) but the stuff that's on the floor she's left alone. Will she eat it, or should I remove it?

Thanks for your help!

will eat their shed, pieces of it anyway, and some who never touch it.

If she ate a little off her feet area and has not touched the other shed skin, I would not leave it too long. If its been more than a day or so, I would remove it. She knows whats shes doing

She sounds quite Bossy with the kitty and YOU, heheheheh

Thats funny, hope she don't start barking everynight,

Have Fun !

As Eve has said, some geckos will eat their shed and some won't. The shed isn't a necessary part of their diet, so if it's not being eaten it's probably best just to remove it. Just remember, besides being vocal tokays are territorial. Ya might git nipped if ya go stickin' yer hands in there LOL. Just kidding, remove anything that is left uneaten.

That's true, but they do soften up a bit in milk. The shed's harder to see in the shredded wheats, so ya can't really tell yer eatin' em. Yum, I feel better mow. AhHahahaaaaaaa
