TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - An outage that left about 7,000 homes in the dark was caused by a snake that slithered into a power substation and caused a short-circuit, a utility official said.

CinergyPSI Energy spokesman Rob Norris said Thursday night's outage, which lasted about 45 minutes, has been traced to a snake that entered one of the company's Terre Haute substations.
"It touched the two things at the same time that shouldn't be touched," he said.
Crews quickly repaired the damage after temporarily rerouting electricity. The outage also caused a brief drop in water pressure in the affected homes.
The snake did not get to experience the blackout, or the return of power, because its brush with the substation killed it, Norris said.
"Anytime an animal shortens out power at a substation, we offer our condolences to the animal," he said.
