Don't use sand. Sand can cause problems. Use another type of substrate.
Paper towels, aspen shavings, anything other then sand.
I personaly use aspen shavings but others prefer what other substrates.
They can burrow under the aspen and it is easy to find their waste and keep clean.

Oh true.. good looking out ... is aspen shavings generally expenisve ? ive never seen it at any local pet shop
It's not bad, 4 or 5 bucks for a 1500 cubic-inch bale. Most pet stores should carry it. You should be able to get it at PetSmart, maybe even Walmart.
went to a wildlife place once... and the snake guy showed us the huge rat snake they had.. in each tank they had coconut bark cubes.. he said pretty good to use.. the bark even keeps mites away..etc.. i havent used it yet as our rat is only a few months old.. but i think when we move him up to another tank thats what we are going to use..

I think I'll be having to order it cuz I've had my nose in every Pet stores substrate section and have never seen the stuff. Thanks for your advice.

you know I looked here and I dont see it.. but from what I heard and read.. it easy to maintain.. since it absorbs moisture very well.. etc.. good luck.. if you get any take a pic of your setup I would like to see.. right now our black rat is about 2-3months old.. soon we will have to move him to a bigger enclosure thats when I am going to order some.. I did a search online and i saw some at plant shops and other stores besides pet stores.. someone even said they might have it at big home supply stores however I havent seen any yet..
Did they have a price? I'd like to get an idea as to how much it costs. And, sure... if I find it and use it....and figure out how to send pictures on this mochine... I'd gladly show you my set up.

i see a bunch online but i checked the local petsmart here and they dont have any either.. if anyone finds some of this at a local retail store let us know..
the ones that were recommended to me was CHUNKS.. i just realized these are chips.. dunno the difference.. but I do see CHUNKS on some of those sites too..
Thanks so much for all the links. Seems to be a bit costly especially when you add on the shipping. I will try to find some locally or I'll have to pass on it. I'll let you know if I find anything and where, if I do.
