Care: Zoos vs. Private keeping

goini04 Jul 19, 2005 06:15 PM

Hello,

I read the articles that Wes posts on many of the forums. Usually for the ones where some moron accidentally turned their animals loose or something of the sort, you usually get some cocky dork yelling that these animals shouldnt be kept and they should be kept in a zoo setting. Much like the case of the issue where an asian water monitor got loose. They said that the animals require special lighting and heating in order to for the animal to thrive (duh). Is there any difference in the type lighting bulbs and heating elements that are provided in zoos compared to private availability? Do these zoos have special systems set up in each and every vivarium/enclosure that makes their care MUCH more elite? I am just curious as to what zoos have to offer (besides the obvious conservation and education reasons) that the private keepers don't or can't provide? Any ideas or info to help me understand this?

Your ideas and help are much appreciated.

Best Wishes,

Chris

The animal receives a direct amount of care in cost in direct relation to customers wanting to see such animal and spending money to see that animal. Most zoos dont keep monitors outside of komodos even close to the way they should, of course that happens with most zoo animals. They arent worried about proper care, they are worried about the bottom line. If the animal doesnt draw a crowd it probably doesnt even live or stay there long in zoos. Some captive breeding has occured at scattered zoos with scattered species of many animals, they arent really worried about it though.
Where do so many zoo animals come from? Private collections, and other zoos.

isnt that sad, ZOO's are supose to be the best place for animals and this is where people get all their info and education on the animals and yet they dont even give a terd if the animal is happy and healty. All the care about is the about of Paying people the bring it!! say but yet so unavoidable!

Where do you guys get this stuff? There are so many monitor species in zoos that aren't KD's - and its not up to the public what we keep or breed. And we don't normally get monitors from breeders. Alot of breeding happens in zoos as well and the animals are well cared for. Actually, more tree monitrs are produced in zoos than anywhere (we have bred them the last 4 years). Try looking around before you guys say silly things.

But I believe many of us have seen "other" zoos, with not so good care. I know you hate it when I speak up, but I have seen many horrifying zoos, with horrible zoo keepers. I did indeed spend a bit of my life working at Zoos all over the country. Again, like with all things, there are a range of zoos and keepers from horrible to great.

I believe Shvar, posted some pics a short while ago of some poorly kept monitors at a local zoo. So he has reason to say what he says.

Also, I believe we are each entitled to our views, as are you. But there indeed is many sides to this coin.

I do understand, your not one of them, and I am sure your zoo is not either.

By the way, I did not know you were working at the zoo, I thought you worked for CRESS, has that changed? If your still at CRESS, why are you taking credit for those breedings, I believe S.D. zoo should be intitled to that, or did CRESS breed them? Thanks for clearing this up. FR

FR, I did not say "I" - I said we, as in the zoo. CRES is the SDZ and I give all credit to the reptile guys. I do understand that some zoos are not great, but you know that since you worked in zoos, things have changed, just like in private collections (where the most deaths and horrible keepers are, although many are great). Just giving the other side of the coin too. I hate when zoos are all lumped together.

FR Jul 21, 2005 04:22 PM

You said, "I hate it when zoos are lumped together" yet your the one who will not allow anyone to think or say anything about zoos, all or any. You sir, are lumping, not us, I know and I have said, there are good and bad in all these areas, even plumbers.

That you want all of us to love the work zoos do is absolutely great, but unfortunately, they also do bad work too.

You say most deaths etc happen with private people, now your lumping private keepers together, just like what your afraid we are doing with zoos. Jeff, let me and us have our opinions, and you are allowed yours, that is indeed the american way.

I have many friends that are/were zoo employees, I can say this, all you have to do is let them talk and you will soon find out they don't think all zoos or zoo keepers are alike, you know, just like all humans. FR

I never said the zoos were the same or the private keepers were - learn to read. Then after you do that, quit responding to me or any posts I put up like you said you would (remember, like when you said I was following you to other forums to cause problems, what a joke). Leave me be, don't talk to me; like you said, we all have opinions, accept it.

Juvinile, why do you wait to say that now, why not on the first one? feeling a little cornered are we?

I am sorry jeff, I will stop picking on you now that I have made some sort of point. After all, thats all we have is our own points, isn't it? FR

jeff lemm Jul 21, 2005 06:30 PM

is realizing you have a problem, now seek help. I see no "picking on me" anywhere - I can deal with it. Plus, I don't see anyone else chiming in, so once again its you and your obvious issues with whatever I say. Enjoy your life and yes, I can have opinions too. Thanks for playin. Email or call me if you have further issues, this isn't the place (although I know you feel the need to scrutinize me in public as thats all you have).

For cryin out loud, calm down. Both of you stop responding to each and just leave it alone. I only asked a simple question, I wasn't expecting to get two rivals trying to rip out each others ethernet cards. It's cool....thanks for your replies!

Best Wishes to both of you.
