P.S. Cute Degu. I have a papillion (small dog) and he's fluffy enough for my liking. I do love dogs, cats etc. but i'll always prefer to have a house full of herps

geckofire Jul 15, 2003 11:09 PM

i've got 8 trees , as for the Degu, it's only staying with me until my gf moves into her new apartment.. then she's taking it and my room will once again be strictly herps and trees

Well, for me, the forum is a bit overwelming at times. I can only check in a few times a week and the number of posts are incredible. All great and useful info though I enjoy reading them

As for my other hobbies...with work and all i don't have much time for anything. I am an artist and used to do all sorts of work from painting to sculpture. I also enjoy wood working so i'm big into tools hehehe. Animals of all sorts are my love though. Lately i've been spending alot of time with my dad working on his aquariums. His guppies just gave birth so we have babies and we expect more not only from them but also from his swords. I also love anything outdoorsy (camping hiking etc.), reading, and cooking.

Don't know if that will class as exciting or not but i thought i'd write anyways
Take care,
Red

geeboo Jul 15, 2003 10:52 PM

well when not working or messing with my herps. I competition hunt my two squirrel dogs. Raise brittany spaniels for upland bird hunting and guide my male dog for a preserve. I also like to work on vehicles (my own mostly anymore) I have a 1966 Chevy pick-up that I have been trying to restore, so far as long as I don't get mad and break something LOL. Got the motor done so far 450 horse of 327 chevy power

I bird hunt. We(me, my dad, and some of his friends) usually go for duck, dove, and sometimes for up north for deer. We dont really need dogs when we go, but we just go a lab, that we plan to take duck hunting with us. She's a quick learner, we just hope she will be ready for the upcoming season.

Sorry if I sound holier than though, but when we care so much about cruelty to herps, be it petco, petland, or any other type of mistreatment, how could we expect others to heed our advice when were cruel to other animals. We cant very well say a leo's life is worth more than a ducks or a dears.
I remember not carying so much about fishing and hunting till I went fishing with my family, and I tried to release the fish we caught. It was horrible, I remember pulling the hooks out, some with the hooks through teir eyes, other with impaled heads that even when we let them go they still ended up dead. It was horrible and has really set me against some sports.
This is not a comparison on fishing vs hunting ducks, birds and dear. But just trying to shed light on unecessary cruelty to animals. We have humane ways for killing animals that we need for food purposes, and if we dont or you know of any cases were animals killed for comercial purposes are not killed in human ways we should fight to stop it!!
I hope you guys dont take this the wrong way
Im in no way passing judgement, just trying to make a tini weeny diference in the way we care for our animals.

Respectfully
Jack

Josh06 Jul 16, 2003 08:56 AM

We do shoot clay pidgeons(discs). But we also go hunting for live animals as well. I understand where you are coming from and I dont know if this helps any, but we do eat them. I, for one, like being out in nature camping and the experience more than the hunting part. The reason I got into hunting in because my dad started me in it. When I go fishing, we usually always release the fish, unless we plan on eating it.

I dont know if this is possible, but maybe since you like the camping stuff more anyways, you could try weening LOL your father of the hunting part, and I know how hard it is to raise parents LOL.
Im curious does it bother you at all when you see the dead animals you hunt, or even worse watch them die, what about seeing the damage the hook causes to the fish (to me its like saying, here let me rip you mouth apart and maybe take an eye out and then Ill let you back to your life!!!).
We who read these forum, being enlightened to the cruelty and harm caused to herps, should extend that care to ALL animals.
You never know maybe you can get your dad to stop huntin???

hi.

in the grand scheme of things, it seems that hunting and fishing are rather minor assaults on wild animals. personally, i would rather lobby to keep another hilton from being built on beaches where the last handful of cyclura nest, or push for a more renewable, ecologically friendly power source so that we dont have to haul oil all over the place and dam every river that is suitable..

eliminate the worst, and then the smallest slights wont matter. it is very difficult to eliminate tradition, especially in a multi-billion dollar a year industry.

good luck!

Ive been looking at this forum although maybe not posting so much for a year, and from his posts Josh and Geeboo seem like very nice persons and very concerned about their herps. I know both of them have helped me on various issues or questions with my leo's at one time or another. And I only said this because I respect both of them, and I they understand that by them changing their ways, it would be a great example to others.

I just think that 'us' who care enough to browse and post on these forums out of concern for our animals, are better educateed, enlightened if you will, than most other people on animal issues and care, and therefore it must start from 'us'.
If we dont no one will!!

Jack

P.S. I really dont want to start a huge discusion I was just hoping to make them think about alitle and maybe change their minds.

Cleopatra Jul 16, 2003 09:55 AM

And I told him if I EVER heard of him firing those things at ANY animal I would shoot him in the foot to see how he liked it!!! lol....he looked pretty scared since I am pretty good with those things (target practice) and said he would never shoot an animal (I knew he wouldn't even if I didn't threaten him). Lol, I get upset even at dinner when my mom jokes about the cow the family is eating (while I munch on my tofu). I freak out when I see people in the cove nearby duck hunting (I had four baby mallards when I was younger) and get extremely sensitive...I am such a tree hugger its sad. LOL!

I still cant stand hurting animals without reason, I remember when I was younger I used to tell everyone I cared more about animals than people, I was young LOL, although I still care about both, people can help themselves more than animals though!!!
But I know shooting guns is a lot of fun, although Ive only done it in target ranges.

Jack

Cleopatra Jul 16, 2003 10:29 AM

2 paintball guns and three beebee guns. They are really really fun to shoot (my favorite is the rifle beebee gun and the Spyder painball gun) but only at targets (except for the paintball guns which are fun to shoot at people when we are playing). I would feel too guilty if I hit an animal. My parents STILL say that I love animals more than people and have said it since I was little. I guess its just the simple innocence of every animal that makes my heart melt....my mom thinks I'm crazy: everytime I see a hurt animal by the side of the road I scream at her to stop the car. If she doesn't then I tell her she is insensitive and what would she do if it was a person on the side of the road??? Lol, sometimes my family can't stand my love for animals. Actually, any innocent creature (human or animal) being hurt is upsetting to me...that's why I don't watch the news anymore.

Dont get me wrong, I enjoy hunting. Most of the animals, will die when shot, so it really a long agonizing death, but there are the occasional exceptions. Of course deer dont die when hit, but I have only been deer hunting about 3 or 4 times, and I have never shot one. And like Eric said, the animals being hunted(legally) arent in harm of extinction, and the modernization of certain areas are killing more animals, by habitat destruction, that we are by killing a few(there is a limit). This might sound stupid or immature, but hunting gives you a thrill that shooting disc will not.

Look first of all I am not going to get all bent out of shape,at least you are not putting down guns in general LOL. I wan't to just pass on a little information here. Without licensed hunting as a way of conservation the animals die a greater and much more unkindly death. Disease, starvation and brakdown of the gene pool due to overpopulation. Licensed hunting is a multi-million dollar bussiness jsut here in the state of Ohio where almost all of it goes right back into conservation programs to help save habitat and build wetlands. I can give you a good example of the harm done by people. In the late 80's I can remember trapping. Well the overseas countries that bought our furs decided to boycott them unlkess we got rid of the leg hold trap. Well no go so now the fur market has dropped by over 3/4 and no trapping. Well the racoon, fox, muskrat have abounded in such numbers that the coon are so sickly with distemper and rabies that I am afraid to touch them, the fox have mange and distemper so bad they are about all sick, I am not sure what diesease muskrats got but it darn near cleared them out of this area for good. Not to rant but it happens so just think about it when hunting is brought up. You can take the boy out of the country but you can't take the country out of the boy

Ok, like I said Im not witch hunting here LOL.
I didnt realy understand much of youre post, but Im just saying if we dont care about shoting an bird, duck or dear, forget the eating and the conservation stuf, just the act of shooting a live animal for no reason indicates a lack of care for living things. And although I wouldnt just go up to any hunter and tel him to stop, I know you have a care for herps, and if you dont care about kiling mamals or fish, then why should mamal or fish lovers care about herps.
Im just saying we that love herps should respect other forms of life so that in turn lovers of other animals wil respect herps as wel.
Now lets have a big HUG. LOL

i LOVE fishing. hooks don't really hurt the fish, not as much as you would think. fish don't have the same types of nerves as humans do. they don't feel pain the same way we do, it doesn't hurt them too bad. and what makes you think that a fish with a hook threw its eye, or threw another part of it's head is going to die regardless? fish heal extremely quickly, as do most marine creatures. water helps heal stuff, especially salt water.

"what makes you think that a fish with a hook threw its eye, or threw another part of it's head is going to die regardless?"
I never just thought it, as I released them from the hok, imediately after having caught them, some person told me they were gona die even if I put them back in the water. So I put about 7-8 back in the water and about 3 of them rose to the surface dead, so they do get kiled by it

Well, I am currently waiting for my script for a fall performance to come in so then I will have to learn my lines and stuff. Its kindof like work, except fun (you get to work with the other actors) and I am also enrolled in voice lessons again for performances and competitions that come up during the school year. When we go on vacation, I like to hike(during the summer) and downhill ski and snowmobile during the winter. I also go horseback riding on my friend's thoroughbred horse. Other than that I am pretty lazy!
